Self-advocacy means understanding your own needs and taking responsibility for communicating them clearly and respectfully. It’s about speaking up for yourself, asking questions when you don’t understand, and seeking help or resources when you need them.
Being a self-advocate involves:
Knowing yourself: understanding your strengths, challenges, and learning style.
Communicating clearly: expressing your thoughts, needs, or concerns to teachers, counselors, and peers.
Taking initiative: asking for clarification, extensions, or extra help instead of waiting for someone else to notice.
Making decisions: being involved in choices that affect your education and future goals.
When you practice self-advocacy, you build confidence, independence, and the skills you’ll need for college, work, and life.
